of employment. I thought I would take time on the last day of 2009 to FINALLY update my blog. I started on 10/26/09 at a career college as a Career Services Specialist supporting the students and graduates of their online diploma and degree classes. It’s quite an interesting turn of events to have a complete change of career: leaving a 14 year career as a commercial interior designer behind and joining the ranks of educators. Interestingly enough, all my fellow CSS’s came from other industries as well. So it looks like the 7 months of unemployment were meant to teach me how to look for a job so that I can now do the same for my 600+ students, which can be very rewarding. I feel bad that I have lost touch with many of the friends that I have made during my unemployment, but many of them have found jobs, so I’m happy for them. I’ve just taken on a roommate to help offset the almost 50% pay cut that I’ve had to take, but I’m making it work. All in all I’m glad to have gone thru the experience because no one will EVER understand what it’s like if they haven’t been thru it. My story gives my students hope and my recommendations to them are tried and true. I will never sugar coat or paint a pretty picture, I will speak plainly and encourage them to take control of their careers and their lives because no one will always be there to do it for them.
So as I enter my 3rd month of employment, I say goodbye to a year that brought me daunting challenges, incredibly wonderful new friends, and a realistic optimism for what’s to come in 2010. I wish all of you the best in the new year and always.
PS – I had a venti chai latte today 🙂
